The 369 method explained: what it is and how to try it mindfully
What the 369 method is
You write an affirmation 3 times in the morning, 6 times in the afternoon and 9 times at night, usually for 21 or 33 days. It spread widely on social media around 2020.
Where it comes from
It is often linked to Nikola Tesla, but there is no verified historical source connecting him to this routine. In Bhavtu we label it a modern adaptation — see Reading our sources.
Why repetition can help
Writing something down repeatedly keeps it top of mind. Research on implementation intentions by Peter Gollwitzer suggests that pairing a goal with a concrete "when–then" plan helps many people follow through. Repetition is the reminder; the plan does the work.
A mindful way to practise
- Pick one affirmation you can believe, e.g. "I am building a calmer morning routine."
- Add one action: "When I wake up, I drink water before checking my phone."
- Write the affirmation 3–6–9 times, or use a shorter version on busy days.
- Reflect weekly in your journal.
